Goal and gameplay. Forming runs and sets of cards in your hand and placing them on the table is the aim of traditional rummy. Three or four cards of the same rank makeknight slots up a set, and three or more consecutive cards of the same suit make up a run. The draw pile is formed when all of the cards are face down on the table after each player receives a certain number of cards at the start of the game. Tossing a card from their hand, players alternately draw a card from the draw pile or the discard pile.
